the PARTY
A place to
Location: Madrid · Spring 2013 · ETSAM School of Architecture
Unit: Valentín Berriochoa · Architectural design IV
The new place for the party occupies a strategic site in the park of "Madrid Río", near Segovia Bridge, replacing the historic nightclub "La Riviera". The plot is defined by a busy street to the east, the river Manzanares to the west, the bridge to the north, and the Hydrographic Center of Miguel Fisac to the south.
Using the 6 metres unevenness between street and river, the terrain is modeled in three different levels. A simple, rectilinear building in the upper level connect with the street, working as a public pavilion for walkers to take a break. The place to the party is a concrete box located under this pavilion, separated from street by a green courtyard that introduce natural light into the building. By the river side, this level has a large cantilever to provide shade to the park visitors. The accesses and connections between levels are solved with the minimum impact. A ramp leads gently down to the third level, the park, and separates the new building from the Hydrographic Center. The project provides some new public spaces like a viewpoint over the concrete roof or a sloping lawn area between the building and Segovia Bridge.
Full-height windows at river side open the party space up to the surrounding landscape, making a light-filled space. The building´s indoor shows visitors the green courtyard on one side, and the park and the river on the other. The service spaces are arranged in two techniques bays at the ends of the room.
The view from the park to the called "Cornice of Madrid" is possible thanks to the low height of the volume, that reach 3 metres over the street level.
